24-Hour McDonald's Drive-Thru Cycling Challenge: 300 Miles Non-Stop! (2026)

In a remarkable test of endurance, a mountain biker completed a grueling 24-hour cycling challenge around a McDonald's drive-thru, covering an astonishing distance of over 300 miles. Matthew Fairbrother, a 21-year-old from New Zealand, embarked on this unique endeavor on Christmas Day, completing a staggering 2,650 laps around the fast-food chain.

But here's where it gets intriguing: Fairbrother described his accomplishment as "deliberately absurd." He explained that the idea for this unusual challenge had been brewing in his mind for about a year, and he determined that December 25th was the only day McDonald's would close its doors, making it the perfect time for his attempt. "For the past twelve months, it’s been on my mind and just burning a hole, so I had to extinguish that fire and get it done," he shared.

Interestingly, Fairbrother set himself a time rather than a distance goal. He mentally committed to cycling for 24 hours straight or until he was asked to leave the premises. Starting at 5 AM, he cycled non-stop, managing to stay in motion for nearly the entire duration, only pausing for just under two hours.

The challenge hinged on whether he would be ejected from the drive-thru, but he assessed the risk as low and pressed on with determination. However, early on in his marathon ride, an unexpected visitor pulled into the parking lot, momentarily threatening the continuation of his challenge. Fortunately, after exchanging a few puzzled glances, the individual drove off, allowing Fairbrother to persist.

By 3 PM, he reached the halfway point, clocking in at 160 miles. When he crossed the finish line at 5 AM the following morning, his GPS tracker confirmed an impressive 300 miles.

Reflecting on his journey, Fairbrother expressed feelings of both exhaustion and pride. He emphasized that this ride was not just about speed; it was a mental exercise, focusing on discipline and perseverance. "I don’t usually do crazy things like this," he admitted.

At heart, he identifies as a mountain biker specializing in long-distance rides, which often test his physical and mental limits. Spending time alone in the mountains has trained him to conquer challenges through sheer willpower. This experience served as a significant test of his mental resilience, something he had never faced in such a demanding manner before.

To prepare for the challenge, he meticulously organized his nutrition, ensuring he consumed enough food at appropriate times throughout the ride. Fairbrother’s passion for biking can be traced back to his family. He started mountain biking at the age of 12, but it wasn't until he turned 17 that his adventurous spirit emerged. Since then, he has traveled internationally to compete, dedicating six months each year to racing abroad.
