Corry Sumner III, a student at Detroit's John J. Pershing High School, has a remarkable story of academic and athletic excellence. But it's his passion for learning and his drive to "attack" ambitious goals that truly sets him apart. As a valedictorian, Sumner has achieved great success in the classroom, but it's his dedication to sports and service that has inspired his peers and teachers alike.
On the morning of February 10th, Irene Chungag, a foreign language teacher at Pershing High School, shared a powerful insight into Sumner's versatility. "I had Corry in my French class when he was in the ninth grade, and again in the 10th grade for his second year of French. Now, I have him as a senior in another language - Spanish," she said. "The amazing part about it is that he wanted to take a third year of French but we don’t offer it, so he opted to take Spanish. Many students are just happy to get through one year of a language, but when a student shows the type of interest where they want to learn beyond just getting a grade, that makes a teacher’s year."
Sumner's passion for learning is not limited to the classroom. He feels at home on a basketball court and on a football field, showcasing his versatility and drive to excel in all areas of his life. But it's his commitment to his goals and his willingness to "attack" them head-on that truly sets him apart.
So, the next time you see Corry Sumner III, remember his story. It's a reminder that success comes from a combination of hard work, passion, and a willingness to "attack" ambitious goals. And who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to take on your own ambitious goals and "attack" them with the same determination as Corry Sumner III.
