Unboxing and Review: Leatherman's Affordable Keychain Multi-Tool - OPNR (2026)

Leatherman has quietly introduced a new minimalist multi-tool that's not only stylish but also incredibly affordable. This handy gadget is perfect for your keychain and won’t put a significant dent in your finances.

Leatherman: A Trusted Name in Multi-Tools

Since its inception, Leatherman, a brand based in Portland, Oregon, has been renowned among everyday carry (EDC) enthusiasts for producing some of the finest multi-tools available. Most of their products are robust folding tools equipped with various practical features. However, every so often, Leatherman surprises us with a refreshing twist.

Enter the OPNR

The latest addition to their lineup is the OPNR, a compact and budget-friendly tool designed specifically to fit on your keychain.

A Nod to the Past

It’s worth noting that this isn’t Leatherman's first attempt at creating single-piece keychain multi-tools. As my colleague Johnny Brayson, who has a keen interest in watches, reminds us, the company launched a series of mini multi-tools called "By the Numbers" more than ten years ago. He proudly owns the #7 model and swears by its practicality.

Simplicity Meets Elegance

While the OPNR may not have as many features as its older counterparts, it offers something equally valuable: a refined design. Unlike the more angular shapes of previous models, the OPNR showcases a smooth and rounded silhouette reminiscent of another local EDC brand, The James Brand. This thoughtful design ensures it won’t snag on your clothing, unlike some sharper alternatives. With a modest yet intelligent selection of functions, this lightweight tool proves to be surprisingly powerful despite its small size.

Useful Features

The OPNR includes several TSA-friendly features: a package opener, a pry bar, a flathead screwdriver, and, perhaps most importantly, a bottle opener.

Keychain Hole? Not So Much…

Although Leatherman lists a "keychain hole" as a feature, I hesitate to classify it as a functional tool; after all, it’s just a way to attach the device to your keys!

Compact and Convenient

If the visuals don't convey how unobtrusive this tool is, its dimensions will surely impress you. Measuring just 2.6 inches in length and 1.01 inches in width, and weighing a mere half ounce, it’s the type of tool you might forget you have until you really need it. And when that moment comes, you'll be glad to have this little marvel on hand.
