The ICJ's decision, which states that countries have a legal obligation to address climate change, has sparked a heated debate. A cable obtained by Al Jazeera reveals that the US administration "strongly objects" to Vanuatu's proposed UN resolution, arguing that it is based on speculative climate models and fabricates legal obligations. This move comes as the Trump administration has been actively working to undermine US climate action, both domestically and at the UN. The cable urges Vanuatu to withdraw its resolution, claiming it could lead to "misguided claims of international legal obligations." However, some argue that this opposition is a missed opportunity for global climate action. Human Rights Watch's director at the UN, Louis Charbonneau, urged governments to support Vanuatu's resolution, emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment to uphold human rights. Vanuatu's UN Ambassador, Odo Tevi, believes the resolution will strengthen global climate action and multilateral cooperation. The resolution has gained support from countries like Barbados, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Jamaica, Kenya, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, the Netherlands, Palau, the Philippines, Singapore, and Sierra Leone, many of which are already facing the devastating impacts of climate change.
